The immune system is a very complicated system. It must be incredibly strong and sophisticated enough to fend off many different infections and illnesses, but not too strong that it overreact to these triggers causing allergic reactions and other autoimmune diseases to develop. This is why sometimes, even with optimal lifestyle practices, the immune system can still become “overactive” and attack something it should not be. The good news is that this overactivity can be corrected by making a few lifestyle changes.
The first thing that you need to address when trying to improve your immune response is diet. The immune system primarily functions when the body is healthy. By eating the right types of food and drinking plenty of water, the immune system stays healthy. When the immune system begins to become deficient in nutrients or if it is experiencing stress, the immune response is slowed and inflammation occurs. Therefore, the first step in improving your immune system is to eat the right kinds of foods and drink enough water.
Exercise is very important for overall health, but it is also extremely important to keep the immune system healthy and strong if you want to avoid getting sick or avoiding injury. Exercise can help to reduce the symptoms of colds and flu and strengthen your defenses against infection. Because the immune system depends on exercise for optimal functioning, you should plan an exercise routine that includes cardiovascular exercises, flexibility training, and weight training.
The second thing that you need to do is take a good multivitamin and supplement it with the minerals and amino acids essential to maintain a healthy immune system. Our modern lifestyle tends to lead us toward a poor diet that lacks nutrients and that is lacking in the vitamins and minerals that are essential for optimal immunity. Stress is also a major contributor to the weak immune system and a major contributing factor to illness and disease. When you take a vitamin, mineral, and vitamin supplement, you will improve your immune system and you will have the ammunition you need to fight infection.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that has many benefits. It is very effective at combating viruses and bacteria because it neutralizes their oxygenated DNA. Vitamin C is also important in forming new blood cells and it helps the body produce antibodies that will attack any foreign or potentially toxic organism trying to enter the body. When the body is healthy and has a strong immune system, it is much harder for pathogenic organisms to survive and thrive.

The final step in maintaining a strong immune system and preventing illness is to include a well balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits that contain the B-complex vitamins, biotin, magnesium, zinc, and folate. Foods that are especially good at boosting the immune system are dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, mustard greens, and turnips, bananas, squash, and sweet potatoes. A well balanced diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables will give your body all the nutrients it needs to function normally. A healthy diet is the first line of defense against illness and disease.
